Mayoral Candidatecalls latest news reports about ongoing predatory sexual behavior among CPS students unconscionable
Earlier this year we learned about the disturbing cases of student-on-student sexual attacks among CPS students. It was heart wrenching to learn that students were both perpetrators and victims, yet yesterday we learned that since this school year began more than 600 incidents of sexual misconduct have already been recorded, the majority of which are student-on-student and 133 of which involve adults. I am frankly incensed by the inability of CPS officials, the CPS Board and the city to stem this disturbing tide of attacks. The only encouraging sign is that students are stepping up and reporting the misconduct.
The litany of incidents continues to widen, while old cases have been identified for further investigation. This is nothing short of a crisis, one that requires a multi-governmental approach from the city and the state.
Since many of the reported cases are student-on-student attacks, I urge CPS to have the Office of Student Protections and Title IX to create a Sexual Abuse training plan for all 7th to 12th grade CPS students; immediately train students on recognizing sexual abuse, whether by students or adults, the penalties related to sexual abuse or unwelcome sexual advances, and how to report sexual abuse.
A city that does not do everything possible to protect its students while on school property is more than broken, it is morally bankrupt, and as your Mayor I pledge to make the needed changes to stem this disturbing situation.
