Mayoral Candidate Dorothy Brown encouraged by issuance of Consent Decree but urges immediate commencement of implementation

Today city and state officials released a plan to carry out police reforms under federal court supervision, as ordered by the U.S. Justice Department.  I’m encouraged by the issuance of the draft of the consent decree negotiated between the Chicago Police Department, the City of Chicago and the Attorney General.  I’m even more encouraged that the Attorney General is overseeing the consent decree process.  However, I feel that the Mayor should have led this effort without the Attorney General having to file a lawsuit.  As Mayor, I will start the reforms, with or without a consent decree, because it is a matter of public safety and justice for all citizens, and it’s a matter of helping the police to do their jobs better.  In the coming days, I will be thoroughly reviewing the draft for completeness.”
