This Independence Day take a moment to reflect

Hi, I am Dorothy Brown, candidate for mayor of the City of Chicago and I want to say Happy 4th of July to all of Chicago.

During this Independence Day, we get an opportunity to spend time with our families. We have picnics and barbecues, we go to concerts, parades, and we even have fireworks. But one thing that we fail to do many times is to think about what Independence Day really means.

Independence Day is the time when our forefathers declared our independence from British rule when they issued the Declaration of Independence who’s preamble says “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men” -and I always add women “are created equal that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”

So during this Independence Day think about America’s core values decency, honesty, and respect for all people regardless of where they are from or who they are.

I know you’ve been concerned about some of the things that have been happening on the national level and they don’t appear to be very American, but as Mahatma Gandhi said “Be the change you want to see” I say “Be the American you want to see.” So let’s spread hope. My theme is “Hope for all Chicago”.

God bless you, God bless Chicago, and God bless the United States of America.

Happy 4th of July.
